Although the 2017 Nissan Qashqai is brand new here, it has already been available for some time in Europe. Here's what reviewers who have had the opportunity to evaluate it have to say about Nissan's urban SUV.
The new Qashqai adopts the Renault-Nissan Alliance's new CMF platform, which significantly changes its dimensions. Longer by 5 cm (4.38 m), wider by 2.6 cm (1.81 m) and lower by 1.5 cm (1.59 m) than the first generation, the Nippon logically changes its silhouette for more dynamism.
The sides are deepened, the curves are more present and the ribbed hood ends on a chrome V-shaped grille.
The changes continue inside where the Qashqai 2 (Qashqai 2017 here) takes a considerable leap forward. First of all in terms of quality and assembly with well-fitting foamed plastics and gloss black lacquering. Progress has also been made in terms of presentation with a center console revolving around a 7-inch touchscreen and a dashboard incorporating a 5-inch LCD screen with all menus and equipment configurable from the steering wheel.
This is a welcome ease of use when you consider that the new Qashqai offers a rich array of new technologies for the segment. It includes emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, automatic parking, rearview cameras and a panoramic view of the car. All these features are available as standard or as an option depending on the four trim levels.
Otherwise, the new Qashqai's handling is very good. The roll and understeer are largely contained, even in the curves of the Madrid hinterland. It must be said that the Japanese is well helped by an active trajectory and attitude control that applies small brakes to stabilize body movements. Presented as an alternative to sedans, the Qashqai also delights customers in the MPV category, whose consensualism can be tiring.
